ExcellentBased on 12 reviewsVerifiedSeaside5754682. September, 2021.Bliss A wonderful campsite that is simple but perfect. My partner and I camped in the wild camping area which was great experience, the peace and quiet was just what we wanted. The site has simple amenities such as composting toilets, taps with drinking water, showers and a sink to wash up in. All the facilities were spotlessly clean and there are plenty of bins to recycle your waste. The owners of the site were very friendly and the farm which the site is on is in stunning countryside. We had a great experience and will definitely be back.Verifiednickb35815. April, 2021.Wild Camping with no frills at its best. If you hate crowded, well laid out, regimented campsites with 5 star facilities and screaming kids with no or little respect for others then this could be the place for you. If you are eco minded, are happy using bio compostible loos and basic but functional showers then this site is a MUST for you. We stayed here for 2 nights as soon as sites opened again post Covid lockdown on the 12th April 2021. We are a simple T5 Camper van with self sufficient on board facilities, solar power, gas water heating etc so the facilities that are on site were not needed but were not available anyway with the exception of water for drinking, Chemical waste dumping tank, and grey water drain with non drinking water tap for refilling chem toilet cassettes and so on. All of course due to existing Covid measures. The Sunset View camping field where we stayed only suits 5 vans, 5 tents and 5 camper vans maximum. During our stay there were 3 other vans, 2 VW Transporters and a large Hymer mobile home and these were all accommodated with ease where ever we wanted to park up with plenty of space. The half acre field is on a slight slope but standard leveling blocks were enough to level up sufficiently. We were met on arrival by Stacey and her dad and shown where to go and briefed on facilities etc. They couldn't have been more helpful. Classic friendly Devon Farmers. The sunset on both evenings was simply awesome and its easy to see why this pitch is called 'Sunset View'. During our stay we walked around as much of the farm and its fields and woods as we could and Stacey and Dad are more than happy for visitors to do this and actively encourage it. We hired a fire pit for a one off fee of £5 and a £5 deposit. A £5 bag of wood is excellent value and lasted us 2 nights.£5 DEPOSIT WAS RETURNED VERY PROMPTLY WHEN WE LEFT HAVING HANDED BACK THE FIRE PIT AND EMPTY WOOD BAG! The site was wonderfully peaceful and has everything you need. It is exactly what it says, No frills wild camping. Fantastic! So, here we are, If you want camping with everything there is to offer, noisy play parks, traffic constantly running through the site and hundreds of people with 5 star toilets and showers then go somewhere else as you won't find this here. If quiet, wild and eco facility camping is for you; if you have kids with an interest in farm animals collecting fresh eggs from the chickens and sitting around an evening camp fire, telling tales and stories, roasting marsh mallows and simply just enjoying nature; then this is the place for you. We loved it and we love our luxuries trust me but 2 - 3 nights here chilling out in the evenings around your fire pit is just so good for the soul. And, to boot, all this is smack bang in the middle of Devon with very easy access to the A 386 North to Barnsatable or South to Okehampton and Tavistock. Dartmoor is as good as on your doorstep too and a must. We will 100% be going back again. Awesome!VerifiedRichard Polglase21. September, 2019.One for the wild camping fans Arrived by motorbike and was meet by Stacy, quick chat about where to put my bike and to explain where the water points etc are. Wild camped in the woods where you just pitch at your chosen spot. Large bag of well chopped wood was cheap and enough for two nights. Lovely rare breed cattle and a couple Tamworth pigs, to say hello to, If your a biker you can chose to camp in the field and have your bike next to your tent, I put my bike on a nice level area near the field and camped in the woods. Great biking roads all around the area. Will be back next year.VerifiedGill C26. August, 2019.Wild camping at its best Just spent another glorious weekend at Westdown Farm. The camping areas are great, so quiet and the best place for star grazing. There’s a simple recycling system and the compost toilets work really well, not smelly portaloos, a great way to teach your children about caring for the environment. The wild camping on the woods with your tent is such a great idea as well, never experienced that before. Loved being allowed to walk around the farm and meet the animals as well, it was an experience to be able to feed left overs to the pigs chickens and goats, Stacey and Farmer Dick were great in letting us know which animals could eat what food. For those of your thinking of coming bring along your windfalls, the animals will love you forever!VerifiedEmkay197924. April, 2019.Great Half Term break Stayed for a few nights in the Easter half term with my 5 year old daughter - who was having her first camping experience. We pitched up in the 'Wild camping' woods and had a great time cooking on a BBQ, building fires each evening, toasting marshmallows and sleeping under the stars. We heard owls, spotted a woodpecker and some passing geese. Big thanks to Stacey who was very helpful from the time of my initial inquiry via the website. She generously gave up some time and showed us around the farm where my daughter loved meeting the animals - and collecting a couple of eggs! All in all it was a thoroughly relaxing few days.VerifiedFio106623. April, 2019.Relaxed camping. Lots of wildlife. Highly recommended. Highly recommended. We camped in our own tent over Easter weekend in the wild camping area amongst plenty of birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Kids climbed trees. Owls at night. Saw the farm animals. Great! The site was quiet, low key, clean, very friendly and helpful. Normal loos have been ingeniously converted to compost ones. We visited Finch Foundry, Lydford Gorge, Tarka Trail (Belstone to Sticklepath along woodland river - perfect for such a hot day) and a Dartmoor Tor whose name I've forgotten.Verifiedamylovesnature21. April, 2019.Hidden gem Just home from a two night stay at Westdown and wish we could have stayed longer. It's a beautiful secluded site with a choice between wild camping and a camping field with full facilities (no hook up but we didn't need it). Compost loos were exceptionally clean and the showers were lovely and hot. We loved the experiences of nature at the site - the dawn chorus in particular was the best we'd heard for years and even included hoots from a tawny owl! Staff were friendly and helful, and we really enjoyed our tour of the farm. We saw butterflies, tadpoles and so many different types of birds, as well as all the farm animals. Our kids absolutely loved it! We visited the nearby Meldon Reservoir on Dartmoor and the scenery was breathtaking. Highly recommend this wonderful place!VerifiedVanessa H18. July, 2018.Wild camping on a farm This is a lovely site suitable for everyone. Children would love the freedom to roam. So pleased that dogs are allowed. The site is close to RHS Rosemoore and also some National Trust and English Heritage sites. The site has green toilets and showers all well thought out. Stacey is very helpful. I've had a wonderful time here.VerifiedSalWaters2. July, 2018.Beautiful wild woodland camping close to Dartmoor What a great find! We spent a night in one of the wild camping areas of Westdown Farm and truly felt like we were getting away from it all. It's a peaceful, stunning farm with an abundance of butterflies, run by a wonderfully friendly family. The facilities were spotless and the thoughtfulness and eagerness of the hosts to provide a great stay shone through. Of course you don't have to wild camp. The farm has a great variety of pitch types/options for your stay. Something for everyone at great rates.
About Westdown Farm
2024 SEASON: 28th of March – 30th of September 2024
Having purchased Westdown Farm in 2005, this unspoilt corner of rural Devon has been home to the Seery family, our rare-breed herdwick sheep and longhorn cattle ever since.
We brought with us a passion for ecology and biodiversity. In the years since being here our 92-acre organic farm has become home to a plethora of native species – including birds, insects and wild deer. Working closely with DWT (Devon Wildlife Trust), our farm was the focus of a wildlife survey where they counted 34 species of native butterflies alone!
Wind the clock on 11 years, in 2016 we opened the gates of Westdown Farm to wild campers and caravanners who share the love of spending time relaxing and unwinding in nature. From small beginnings, our campsite has grown quickly, now offering a total of 15 pitches across our meadows and woodland – three of which house our famous glamping cabins (nicknamed, Posh Bedz in Shedz).
